We welcome new members in all voices, and are particularly keen to recruit more tenors and basses.
How to join
Contact Carol Atherton, our membership secretary, on 0114 2589770 / 07789 514093 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange to come to rehearsals to see if you like what the Oratorio Chorus does.
After you have attended a few rehearsals our Director of Music, Alan Eost, will arrange your audition. Auditions are usually carried out by our Vocal Coach, Vivien Pike, and are conducted in as non-threatening a way as possible.
Help may be available to you under our ‘apprentices’ scheme if you wish to join us but need to acquire/refresh singing skills before audition. Contact us if you'd like to find out more.
Once a member, as well as singing in the main choir, you may be offered opportunities to try out for SOC’s chamber choir or women’s choir, or to participate in singing events like carols at Chatsworth.
When and where?
We rehearse on Wednesday at St. Andrew's United Reformed Church, Upper Hanover Street, Sheffield, S3 7RQ. Rehearsals start at 7.30 pm and usually finish at 9.30 pm, with a refreshment/comfort break in the middle. View map and directions
The membership subscription is currently £120 a year, with concessions for students and people claiming certain benefits. We also charge a small fee for hiring music – usually £2 or £3 per copy.
Members have access to a range of singing activities including free voluntary vocal clinics. There is a small charge made for singing technique and sight-reading sessions in SOC Academy.
A small extra subscription is charged (with concessions applying) if you sing in a ‘chamber choir only’ or ‘women’s choir only’ concert.
A lot goes on behind the scenes to make SOC concerts and other events a success. If you don’t sing, you might be interested in helping the choir’s administration or concert management team. Contact the Chair on email@example.com for more details.
