Music for a Jubilee - Competition Rules
Sheffield Oratorio Chorus “Music for a Jubilee” – rules of the competition
- Who can enter:
- The competition is open to all residents of the UK, including
those studying in the UK who are not UK citizens and who are 18 years of age or
over on the date of submission. However, members of the Sheffield Oratorio Chorus,
their immediate family and those contracted to work for the Chorus are excluded
from entry.
- There is a non-refundable administration fee of £10 payable
on each submission.
- Entry requirements:
- Entrants are required to submit 3 copies of the manuscript in an
A4 portrait format for a ten to fifteen minute “fanfare” work scored for a chorus of
Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass with an accompaniment of piano/organ with brass (Max of
8 players) and percussion, including timpani (Max of 3 players).
- Entrants will be given a choice of text to set to music and they
may use the whole or part of one text.
- The work submitted must be an original work and must not have had
a previous public performance and must not be scheduled to receive a public performance
within 18 months of the submission date.
- Submission of entries must be accompanied by a completed application
form. The submission will be a complete score and include, bar numbers, rehearsal letters
and page numbers, and must be accompanied by a vocal score suitable for rehearsal.
- Entries must be received by the end of the 31st January 2008.
- Prizes:
- The prize awarded to the winning entry will be £2000 in cash and
additionally, the winning entry will be premiered by the Oratorio Chorus at one
of its concerts during its 2008/09 season, where it will be given full billing
and appropriate publicity.
- The panel of judges will have the discretion to award prizes for second
and third place according to merit and as they see fit.
- Judging:
- The competition will be judged by a panel appointed by the Committee of the Sheffield
Oratorio Chorus. The judges’ decisions are final and neither the judges nor the committee of
the Chorus will enter into any correspondence with any entrant concerning the results of the
competition.
- The committee reserves the right to employ additional and/or alternative judges to those advertised.
- The winning entrant will be notified personally by the end of May 2008.
- The decision as to which public performance during the jubilee season the winning entry will
be performed lies with the committee of the Sheffield Oratorio Chorus and its Director of Music.
- Rights:
- Copyright: The copyright of all entries will remain the property of the entrants save that,
for any composition that is awarded a prize or a position within the competition, the Sheffield
Oratorio Chorus retains the right to the first performance. If for any reason a first performance
cannot be given within the first 18 months of the submission date, permission for a first performance
elsewhere will not be unreasonably withheld. In the event of future performances and/or publication
of the piece the winning entrant must acknowledge the Sheffield Oratorio Chorus in any publication
and/or publicity for any performance.
- It is a condition of participating in the competition that entrants agree that the rights to any
public broadcasting by the Oratorio Chorus of his/her work shall belong to the chorus to dispose of
as it sees fit.
- General provisions:
- The Sheffield Oratorio Chorus cannot accept responsibility for late or lost entries.
- The Sheffield Oratorio Chorus reserves the right to cancel this competition at any stage if
deemed necessary by the Committee or if circumstances arise outside of its control.
- The competition is administered by the Committee of the Sheffield Oratorio Chorus.
- Entrants will be deemed to have accepted these rules and to have agreed to be bound by them
when entering this competition.
